Honouring Grief

With Swami Krishnapremananda*

With hatha classes and sacred sound sessions with Ali Gunning*

17 - 21 June 2026

A journey into the heart of grief, and the healing power of sacred sound and presence.

This retreat, held for the first time in the Ashram, offers a supportive and sacred space to explore the nature of grief. Together, we will look at how we, both personally and collectively, attempt to avoid grief and how turning gently toward it can allow space for healing. By facing grief, we make room for gratitude, appreciation, and even deeper love.

About This Retreat

Grief is the other side of love.

Whatever we love, we will one day lose. Grief touches all of us, it is a universal human experience. While it often comes through the loss of loved ones, grief can also arise from our deep connection to the world: grief for our planet, for the suffering we witness around us, for ancestral pain, for our unresolved wounds, and for the dreams that remain unfulfilled.

Each day begins with morning chanting and meditation. Early morning hatha (asana) classes will be led by Ali Gunning. These practices help settle the body and mind, preparing us for deeper inward work. The daily rhythm includes yoga nidra, as well as opportunities for pair and group sharing. In the evenings, we will gather for kirtan (devotional singing) and satsang (open dialogue/question and answers).

Each afternoon features a meditative sacred sound session, facilitated by Ali. These immersive sound journeys weave together the deep, visceral tones of gongs with the shimmering resonance of crystal bowls, the gentle rhythm of rain sticks and drums, and the melodic presence of flute, chimes, and other instruments. These sessions offer a potent energetic field to support the integration of grief work and promote deep healing and rest.

This retreat invites you to honour your grief, not to fix it. When we give grief the space to move and express, we also open ourselves to the possibility of transformation. In the wake of sorrow, gratitude and joy can slowly return.

The retreat is open to everyone, as we all carry grief in one way or another. However, if you have very recently experienced a significant loss, your grief may still be too immediate and raw to fully benefit from this kind of setting. If you feel called to attend, please contact the Ashram and ask to speak with Sw. Krishnaprem before booking.

Please note that the sound healing sessions are not suitable during the first trimester of pregnancy. If you have a pacemaker, epilepsy, tinnitus or hearing sensitivities, metal implants from recent surgery, or are navigating significant mental health challenges or trauma, we ask that you speak directly with Ali in advance to discuss suitability.

About Ali Gunning

Ali has been practising yoga for over twenty years and teaching since 2009. Her journey began with traditional yoga and yoga therapy training in India. Over time, her practice evolved toward forms that invite us to slow down and turn inward — including yin yoga, yoga nidra, and somatics.

While travelling in India, Ali discovered the powerful, healing nature of sacred sound. This led her to study a range of sound therapy modalities, which now form a central part of her offerings. She lives in Cornwall, where she holds a private sound therapy practice and offers women’s retreats and sound practitioner trainings.

More About This Retreat

This 10-day retreat will include the tantric meditation practice of Tattwa Shuddhi. This practice encourages us to explore the many layers of our being – from the most obvious to the most subtle. It offers us the possibility, through direct experience, of seeing the unseeable and realising the unthinkable. It gives a step-by-step approach to free us from spiritual ignorance and misidentification, and open us up to the mystery of our Being.

Knowing that our life span is limited also motivates us to live fully – to embrace life with all its transient joys and sorrows, to appreciate the gift of the present moment and to awaken to that part of our being which is deathless.

Participant numbers are limited to 16 only so as to maximise the mini group work and depth of sharing that is a key part of this retreat experience.
