The Pawanmuktasana series is an important group of practices that can have a highly beneficial effect on the body and mind.
In a sense it's a pre-asana practice, considered to be an essential practice for laying a firm foundation for the successful development of a full asana practice.
At the same time, it's a valuable asana practice in itself, opening up all the major joints, relaxing the muscles, and developing awareness of the body's movements and the subtle effects these have at various levels of being.
The word pawan means 'wind' (referring to 'prana'); mukta means 'release' and asana means 'pose'. Therefore pawanmuktasana can be read to mean a series of poses that develop the free flow of prana in the body and mind.
The series is divided into three distinct groups of asanas, which supplement each other, stimulating and encouraging the free flow of subtle energy throughout the body.
Daily practice of pawanmuktasana parts 1, 2 and 3 over a period of months brings about a profound relaxation and toning of the entire body and mind.
This is highly valuable in itself and also as a preparation for more advanced asana practice as well as higher practices.
