The Teachings of the Bhaja Govindam

The Bhaja Govindam, meaning “Sing the Names of the Divine,” is a timeless Sanskrit text attributed to the great sage Adi Shankaracharya. Blending the depth of Advaita Vedanta (Non-Dualism) with the devotional spirit of Bhakti Yoga, this text offers a powerful reminder to look beyond intellectual pursuits and worldly distractions, and instead, turn inward toward the heart of spiritual realisation.

The Bhaja Govindam consists of thirty verses and a recurring chorus, which together form a lyrical call to awaken from the illusion of separation and return to the essential truth of who we are. Its central message is simple yet profound: in the midst of all life’s duties and distractions, don’t forget to remember the Divine, don’t forget to remember your Self.

According to tradition, the text was born in a moment of spontaneous wisdom. One morning, as Shankaracharya walked along the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi with his disciples, he saw an elderly man, near the end of his life, studying Sanskrit grammar with great focus. Moved by compassion and by the futility of the man’s late pursuit of knowledge Shankaracharya burst into spontaneous verse, urging him to shift his attention to what truly matters. His disciples followed suit, each contributing a verse in what became the Bhaja Govindam. The message was not meant just for the old man but for all of us. Life is short, unpredictable. Why wait to begin our search for truth? The time is now.

This retreat offers a rare opportunity to dive deeply into the Bhaja Govindam from two rich and complementary perspectives. Swamiji will guide us through the text with his insightful commentaries, sharing the philosophical and spiritual meanings embedded in the verses. His teachings illuminate how the wisdom of Bhaja Govindam applies to our modern lives, helping us to live with greater clarity, detachment, and devotion.

Alongside this, Rajesh will bring the text to life through music. His devotional singing opens the heart and invites us into a direct, felt experience of the text’s deeper truths. Group chanting and participation will allow us not just to understand Bhaja Govindam, but to embody it, to feel it resonate in our hearts and voices.

Together, these teachings and practices offer a complete and experiential journey through this classical text, awakening insight, devotion, and a deeper connection to the Self.

Whether you’re drawn to the philosophical clarity of Advaita or the devotional warmth of Bhakti, this retreat offers both paths in harmony. It is an invitation to pause, turn inward, and reconnect with what is truly essential.
