The Board of Trustees of Mandala Yoga Ashram is seeking an Independent Trustee to provide impartial oversight, strengthen governance, and support the charity’s mission.

Who are we?

Mandala Yoga Ashram (Charity Number: 1195209) is an internationally recognised centre of yogic knowledge, based in Wales, UK. We offer residential retreats, online courses, and yoga teacher training based on the authentic teachings of yoga, advaita, and tantra.

The mission of Mandala Yoga Ashram is to carry the light of traditional yoga to the world in practical and scientific terms that are relevant to modern life; to present yoga as a means of improving physical, emotional and mental health, and awakening us to our Essential Being. In this way the Ashram teachings bring deep meaning, happiness and fulfillment into our lives as a service to all in society.

Our approach emphasises meditation, transformation, and the cultivation of direct insight through practice and personal experience. As one of the few authentic ashrams to be found outside of India, we provide a vibrant link between the spiritual teachings of the yogic sages and sincere seekers of the modern world. Founded in 1986, the Ashram has over the years been a source of profound learning and transformation for thousands of people from all walks of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Ashram follows its governing document and legal requirements.
  • Act collectively and independently in Board decisions, free from personal bias.
  • Provide impartial scrutiny and challenge to strengthen governance.
  • Support transparency, integrity, and accountability in all aspects of the charity.
  • Help the Board make decisions that reflect the Ashram’s mission and values.
  • Strengthen credibility with Charity Commission.

Responsibilities of all trustees

  • Support and provide advice on Mandala Yoga Ashram’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
  • Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
  • Oversee Mandala Yoga Ashram’s financial plans and budgets and monitorand evaluate progress.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of Mandala Yoga Ashram.
  • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
  • Review and approve Mandala Yoga Ashram’s financial statements.
  • Provide support and challenge to Mandala Yoga Ashram’s Director in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
  • Keep abreast of changes in Mandala Yoga Ashram’s operating environment.
  • Contribute to regular reviews of Mandala Yoga Ashram’s own governance.
  • Attend Board meetings (mostly online), adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
  • Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Mandala Yoga Ashram’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
  • Contribute to the broader promotion of Mandala Yoga Ashram’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issue, in which the trustee has special expertise.

Attributes and Qualities

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. No previous governance experience is required—we provide full induction and training. Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of Mandala Yoga Ashram.

  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.

  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.

  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Enthusiasm for our vision and mission.

  • Willingness to lead according to the ashram’s values.

  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Time Commitment

Estimated at approximately 5 hours per month, including:

  • Attending Trustee meetings (mostly online; one in-person meeting annually at the Ashram in Wales, usually in March)

  • Reviewing papers and contributing to discussions

  • Occasional ad hoc matters requiring input or guidance

Our Founder

Mandala Yoga Ashram was founded in 1986 by Swami Nishchalananda on his return from India after spending 14 years with his Guru, Swami Satyananda, studying all aspects of yoga and imbibing the true essence of this ancient tradition. Swami Nishchalanda ('Swamiji') is recognised as a genuine Yoga Acharya - a Master of Yoga.

The Ashram is a registered charity whose mission is to uplift humanity through the teachings of yoga, advaita and tantra. As an independent institution not affiliated to any set of religious beliefs, the purpose of the Ashram is simply to help people to remember their own sacredness and the sacredness of all that exists.
