Help Shape the Future of Mandala Yoga Ashram

The Board of Trustees are seeking to appoint a new Trustee Secretary to strengthen our governance and administrative capacities. This voluntary role is ideal for someone with experience in organisational administration, particularly within the charity sector

Who are we?

Mandala Yoga Ashram (Charity Number: 1195209) is an internationally respected centre of yogic knowledge, based in Wales, UK. We offer residential retreats, online courses, and yoga teacher training, all rooted in the authentic teachings of Yoga, Advaita, and Tantra.

Our approach centres on meditation, personal transformation, and the cultivation of direct insight through dedicated practice. As one of the few authentic ashrams outside India, we serve as a vibrant bridge between the wisdom of the yogic sages and modern spiritual seekers. Since our establishment in 1986, the Ashram has been a source of profound learning and transformation for thousands from all walks of life.

Secretary Role

In addition to fulfilling the general responsibilities of a trustee (see below), the Trustee Secretary will take the lead in supporting the Board’s administrative effectiveness.

Board Administration Oversight
  • Monitor the scheduling of Board meetings, ensuring timely notice and distribution of relevant documents to all trustees.
  • Maintain accurate records of board decisions, documents and actions on Google Drive, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Statutory Filings and Returns
  • Oversee the timely submission of all statutory filings and returns to the Charity Commission.
  • Ensure legal obligations and charity governance standards are met through accurate record-keeping.
Support to the Board and Chair
  • Work closely with the Chair to plan and organise board meetings.
  • Compose recruitment adverts and structure interview process for new trustees.
  • Support the induction and training of new trustees, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Be an additional point of contact for governance queries from trustees, staff, and volunteers.

Responsibilities of all trustees

  • Support and advise on the Ashram’s purpose, vision, goals, and activities.
  • Approve strategies and policies and monitor their implementation.
  • Oversee financial plans and budgets, ensuring effective administration.
  • Identify, monitor, and control key organisational risks.
  • Review and approve financial statements and contribute to governance reviews.
  • Attend Board meetings (mostly online), prepared to contribute meaningfully to discussions.
  • Act legally and in good faith to promote and protect the Ashram’s interests.
  • Contribute actively to the broader promotion of the Ashram’s aims and values.
  • Be willing to get involved beyond Board meetings, including scrutinising documents, leading discussions, or providing expertise on specific issues.

Attributes and Qualities

  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept trustee responsibilities and liabilities, acting in the best interests of Mandala Yoga Ashram.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise independent judgement, and work effectively as a Board member.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, with attention to detail and discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Personal commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Alignment with the values and mission of Mandala Yoga Ashram.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.

Terms of Appointment

  • This is a voluntary position, however, in recognition of your contribution, after a six-month trial period, you will be eligible for a complimentary place on a residential retreat (up to a maximum of 5 days; longer courses are excluded).
  • Complimentary access to the Sangha online community.
  • Time commitment: Approximately 5 hours per month.
  • Induction and support: Full induction, ongoing support, and training provided as needed.

Our Founder

Mandala Yoga Ashram was founded in 1986 by Swami Nishchalananda on his return from India after spending 14 years with his Guru, Swami Satyananda, studying all aspects of yoga and imbibing the true essence of this ancient tradition. Swami Nishchalanda ('Swamiji') is recognised as a genuine Yoga Acharya - a Master of Yoga.

The Ashram is a registered charity whose mission is to uplift humanity through the teachings of yoga, advaita and tantra. As an independent institution not affiliated to any set of religious beliefs, the purpose of the Ashram is simply to help people to remember their own sacredness and the sacredness of all that exists.
