Treasurer

Help Shape the Future of Mandala Yoga Ashram

The Board of Trustees of Mandala Yoga Ashram is seeking to appoint a new Treasurer to join our Board and help strengthen our financial governance. This voluntary role is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in finance—ideally with experience in charity finance, although a strong commercial background and a keen willingness to learn are also highly valued.

Who are we?

Mandala Yoga Ashram (Charity Number: 1195209) is an internationally respected centre of yogic knowledge, based in Wales, UK. We offer residential retreats, online courses, and yoga teacher training, all rooted in the authentic teachings of Yoga, Advaita, and Tantra.

Our approach centres on meditation, personal transformation, and the cultivation of direct insight through dedicated practice. As one of the few authentic ashrams outside India, we serve as a vibrant bridge between the wisdom of the yogic sages and modern spiritual seekers. Since our establishment in 1986, the Ashram has been a source of profound learning and transformation for thousands from all walks of life.

Treasurer Role

In addition to carrying out all the responsibilities of a trustee (see below), the Treasurer will maintain an overview of the Ashram’s financial affairs, ensuring effective financial measures, controls, and procedures are in place. The Treasurer will report to the Board regularly on the Ashram’s financial health and support the organisation to remain on a sound financial footing.

  • Ensure accurate accounting records are kept and that robust accounting procedures and controls are maintained.
  • Support the development and implementation of comprehensive financial policies, including those relating to reserves and cost management.
  • Monitor and advise on the Ashram’s financial viability, and oversee adherence to financial controls and systems, liaising regularly with the Director.
  • Advise on the financial implications of the Ashram’s strategic plan, including oversight of financial risk management.
  • Ensure that annual accounts prepared by the Ashram’s auditors or accountants are submitted to the Charity Commission.
  • Keep the Board informed of its financial duties and responsibilities and help develop the Board’s collective financial understanding.

  • An excellent communicator able to present financial information clearly to non-finance specialists.
  • A willingness to play an active role in forecasting, budgeting, and liaising with auditors/accountants.
  • Ability to provide practical advice and guidance on financial matters and new initiatives.

Responsibilities of all trustees

  • Support and advise on the Ashram’s purpose, vision, goals, and activities.
  • Approve strategies and policies and monitor their implementation.
  • Oversee financial plans and budgets, ensuring effective administration.
  • Identify, monitor, and control key organisational risks.
  • Review and approve financial statements and contribute to governance reviews.
  • Attend Board meetings (mostly online), prepared to contribute meaningfully to discussions.
  • Act legally and in good faith to promote and protect the Ashram’s interests.
  • Contribute actively to the broader promotion of the Ashram’s aims and values.
  • Be willing to get involved beyond Board meetings, including scrutinising documents, leading discussions, or providing expertise on specific issues.

Attributes and Qualities

  • Energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the Ashram’s mission.
  • A desire to broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board.
  • No previous governance experience is required—induction and training will be provided.

  • Creativity, strategic thinking, sound independent judgement, and effective teamwork.
  • Excellent communication skills and a readiness to participate actively in discussions.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Alignment with the Ashram’s values, vision, and mission.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.

  • Complimentary access to the Sangha online community.
  • Time commitment: Approximately 5-8 hours per month.
  • Meetings: Attend regular trustee meetings (mostly online), with one in-person meeting in Wales each year (usually March). Participate in strategy or training sessions as required.
